Borsa İstanbul Research Department hosts prominent economists and specialists on the financial markets, investors and economy in general in a series of seminars. Within this framework, the latest guest of Borsa İstanbul Research Department was world-renown John Bollinger, with the contributions of Tacirler Yatırım.
John Bollinger is the author of "Bollinger on Bollinger Bands", twice awarded and translated to eight languages. Bollinger is both a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Market Technician (CMT). John Bollinger delivered a two-hour seminar for a selected audience at Borsa İstanbul on the “Bollinger Bands”, his technical studies that can be integrated in numerous analytical programs.
John Bollinger: “It is possible to see the market risks in the upper and lower bands”
John Bollinger told the audience about the process of inventing the Bollinger Bands: “In 1981, we had a very popular stock exchange system. During that time, the market players made significant profits. However, later, the graphs that were used at the time for analysis purposes lost relevance. I knew that we needed a revision. Initially, we switched to half logarithmic scale, and then to linear scale. At the next phase, we started to use the Price Bands. During a trip to Japan, I got to know Candlestick Charts. I created the Bollinger Bands by joining Candlestick Charts with Price Bands. With Bollinger Bands, if the level is high, then the price is high, and vice versa. In the upper and lower Bollinger Bands, you can see the risks that may lead to dynamic and varying cases in fragile markets.”
“The Change in Borsa İstanbul is Proportional to Turkish Investors’ Will to Play a Role in the Global Markets”
Bollinger also commented on the transformation that Borsa İstanbul has gone through. He said, “Today, global markets are undergoing a very rapid change. States encourage their local markets to keep up with this change. The recent change is closely proportional to Turkish investors’ will to play a role in the global markets. If you said to me “We are not going to change” six months ago, then I would say to you, “the world is going to change, anyway”.
“Turkish Lira Provides a Significant Advantage for Turkey”
John Bollinger also spoke about the Turkish economy and the recent credit rating increase by three different credit rating agencies. Bollinger said, “Rather than commenting on the reasons for the credit rating increases by the three leading agencies, I would like to emphasize the great advantage that your independent currency, that is, Turkish Lira, provides you. In the Euro zone, we are face to face with an unforeseen situation. Furthermore, countries including Spain, Italy and Greece are making an effort to go back to their old currencies to stay competitive. I really don’t know how the problems in the Euro zone may be solved, but Turkey should be aware that she is very lucky to stay out of this. Turkish Lira provides an advantage for Turkey in terms of economy, which is evaluated as a credit rating increase by the credit rating agencies”.
