In consideration of the fact that securities exchanges have a significant mission, i.e., as a platform to guide companies in the process of adopting policies against environmental, social, corporate governance risks, and transmitting information on companies’ sustainability policies to responsible investors, Borsa İstanbul starts calculating BIST Sustainability Index on November 4, 2014.
The companies that will be included in BIST Sustainability Index will be announced at the Sustainability Index Meeting with the participation of Borsa İstanbul Chairman & CEO Dr. İbrahim M. Turhan.
Borsa İstanbul to cooperate with EIRIS for the Sustainability Index
As one of the “sustainable” exchanges of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), Borsa İstanbul initiated the efforts for a sustainability index in consideration of the fact that securities exchanges have a significant mission, i.e., as a platform to guide companies in the process of adopting policies against environmental, social, corporate governance risks, and transmitting information on companies’ sustainability policies to responsible investors. Borsa İstanbul works in cooperation with Ethical Investment Research Services Limited (EIRIS), with a more than 25 years’ experience in environmental, social and corporate governance issues, and serving more than 100 global asset owners, managers and index calculators.
During the January-March 2014 period, companies included in BIST 30 Index were evaluated on the basis of the publicly disclosed information as of June 30, 2014, and companies meeting the minimum criteria determined by Borsa İstanbul were included in the Sustainability Index.
The Index will allow companies to compare their sustainability performance locally and globally. With the Index, companies are offered a performance evaluation instrument for improvement and determining new targets, as well as strengthening their corporate transparency and accountability and risk management skills regarding sustainability issues. By discriminating companies that adopt sustainability and corporate governance principles, the Index will also allow investors to prefer such companies. Another purpose of the Index is to improve the understanding, knowledge accumulation and practices regarding sustainability among Turkish companies, particularly those traded on Borsa İstanbul.
