The conference will bring leading innovators, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and experts from the region and beyond together to explore the roadblocks and spurs to fostering innovation in the MENA region. A systematic attempt will be made to identify the primary requisites for building innovation economies, Vand the manner in which such requirements could be replicated and implanted in the MENA region. Special attention will be devoted to the experiences of formerly developing countries, such as South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, as well as Israel, which have achieved varying levels of success in establishing the foundations of innovation economies.
What lessons can governments, companies, educational institutions, and entrepreneurs in the Middle East and North Africa derive from the experiences of the East Asian and Western countries and companies? Some of the issues that will be explored in the conference include the quality and quantity of each country’s talent pool, existence and quality of research universities, funds allocated to development spending, existence of innovation clusters, number of patents registered in science, technology, and engineering,
levels and ease of commercialization of inventions, number of research intensive companies, number of high technology companies, relations with diaspora communities, the rising appeal of high technology entrepreneurship among young Middle Easterners, attraction of venture capital, cultural attitudes towards failure, availability and accessibility of mentors, role models, and financing, as well as existence and extent of brain circulation.
